CemtrexLabs Crafts Modern Game with Retro Charm to Boost Modelo X Seattle Kraken Sweepstakes

CemtrexLabs developed an app-less game that engages users and encouraged participation in the Modelo x Kraken sweepstakes.

The Background

For years, Seattle dreamed of an NHL team of its very own. In 2018, after a call for season tickets, Seattle received 10,000 deposits in 12 minutes, eventually reaching over 25,000. In 2021, the Seattle Kraken became the newest ice hockey team, joining the National Hockey League, as the 32nd team in the League.

Working extensively to build their brand and generate excitement, the team looked for ways to spread the word of their long-awaited formation. The need to publicize the team only grew after they named Modelo the team’s official import beer. Looking to highlight their partnership, they trusted CemtrexLabs to develop a unique, branded digital experience to mark the occasion.

The Challenge

Build an immersive, app-less experience that spreads the word about Seattle Kraken, drums up excitement about the brand partnership, and encourages users to enter the sweepstakes.

Solution

The CemtrexLabs team developed and deployed a delightful, branded game – the Modelo x Kraken Skate Challenge – to maximize conversions and bring brand collaboration to life.

Features + Process

Inspired by the lo-fi video games of the 80s and 90s, the CemtrexLabs team emulated the classics through carefully constructed graphics, sounds, and game structure. With custom-designed, pixelated graphics, an array of sound effects, and a simple game experience, the end product was an ode to the games of yesteryear – accessibly with the ease of the modern-day.

Designed with simplicity and retro gaming in mind, the team wanted to be sure that the game didn’t sacrifice user immersion for authenticity. The C-Labs team made sure to include enough gameplay elements – such as enemies, rewards, and smooth transitions – to create an engaging experience for the user.

With just one month to create the entire experience, the design and development teams worked in tandem to reduce inefficiencies and iterate as quickly as possible. From developing perspective to perfecting sprites and loops, every challenge was quickly overcome.

Results

Garnering hundreds of sweepstakes signups in its first week, the game has already taken the Modelo x Kraken partnership to new heights. Whether they win or lose the game, users are clearly engaging with the brands and enjoying a taste of old-fashioned fun.
